Diabetes Pandemic:

The International Diabetes Federation conference in Parishas predicted a worldwise diabetes pandemic. Adult onset diabetes, which is essentially diet related, is beginning to be seen more and more in children. This recent prediction simply follows the alarming increase of adult onset diabetes being seen.

It is a precursor to obesity, heart disease and a whole range of other problems. This has a massive economic impact.

"In some countries with a higher incidence, diabetes has a higher economic impact than AIDS," Williams Rhys, professor of clinical epidemiology at the University of Wales, told a news conference.

In a few decades diabetes will be even more out of control.

Diabetes (type II) occurs because of insulin resistance;which in turn occurs because of continually high glucose levels in the blood. This is diet related. With more and more simple carbohydrates being consumed this is inevitable. (Coke, soft drinks, sweets, white flour based products like bread and cakes etc)

The solution? Eat a less processed diet, with whole natural foods, and don't be afraid of protein or fat.

Some statistics which apply to America. These reflect general trends throughout the West.

"Americans are even fatter than they think they are, with nearly a third of all adults -- almost 59 million people -- rated obese in the National Health and Nutrition Examination surveys based on actual body measurements. "

One third of all adults not just overweight, but actually obese!

"The number of obese adult Americans increased more than 50 percent between 1980 and 1994, according to a 2002 federal study. "

Things are getting worse than this. It has been estimated that 1 in 3 children born in the year 2000 AD will develop diabetes in the US. Simple carbohydrates are the primary reason.
From information from the American Dietetic Association:

"Researchers from Purdue and Creighton universities and the University of Tennessee conducted several studies on calcium intake and weight. Results consistently showed that people who consumed more calcium had a lower body weight or gained less weight than those who consumed lower amounts of calcium."

The calcium would I suppose have primarily been from a diary base. It has been suggested that calcium helps break down body fat and may prevent fat cells from making fat. But it could also be the fat content in diary products that help.

Whatever the reasoning, diary products are certainly not to be avoided.

International Obesity Study Finds No Link Between Dairy Consumption And Increased Body Fat in Teenage Girls

A study which followed girls from pre to post adolescence has investigated the relationship between dairy product consumption and BMI.

It concluded that consumption of diary products did not lead to any BMI gain or increase of body fat.

"Teenage girls can maintain a healthy weight and include dairy products. Dispelling that myth is important because the potential health benefits of the natural calcium in dairy products, particularly its role in building bone mass, are so significant in adolescent girls. The window for maximizing bone mass occurs only in adolescence and doesn't occur again."

- Aviva Must, associate professor of community health at Tufts University and one of the study's authors.

Because of the modern 'fat fad' myth that tries to tell everyone how bad fat is for you (especially saturated fat), and how it increases weight (another myth), many teenage girls don't get the calcium they need from diary products.

Adolescents especially require calcium intake, else this will lead to osteoporosis later on in life.
